Chapter 38
Serena Joy's Desperate Bargain
Serena Joy corners Offred with a proposition that strips away any remaining pretense of what this household is. She knows her husband is almost certainly sterile. Critical Thinking Exercise
Map the Gap Between the Sermon and the Secret
Think of a rule, policy, or value that someone in your life enforces loudly and publicly, whether at work, in your family, or in your community. On a piece of paper, draw a simple two-column list. On the left, write what they say the rule is for. On the right, write what you think they actually get out of enforcing it. Then ask yourself: where does the rule fail to deliver even for them? That gap is where the real story lives.
Consider:
- •Is the person enforcing this rule also subject to it, or have they quietly carved out exceptions for themselves?
- •What would they have to admit about themselves or their choices if they publicly acknowledged the rule was not working?
- •If they came to you privately and asked you to bend the rule with them, what would that tell you about the actual power balance between you?
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when you stayed loyal to a system, a job, a relationship, or a set of rules, even after it stopped delivering what you were originally promised. What kept you defending it? What finally made you see the gap clearly, and what did you do with that clarity?
