Chapter 28
Strike at the Ranch, Casy Killed, Tom Injured
Jim Casy is dead. Tom Joad found him in the dark outside Hooper ranch, not the wandering preacher he once knew but something harder and clearer: a labor organizer, a man with a plan. Casy had been explaining the strike in simple terms. Owners cut wages because they can. Workers starve because they are divided. Unite, and you change the math. Tom was just starting to understand when the vigilantes came. What happens next is fast and brutal. Casy is struck down while standing his ground. Tom, without thinking, fights back. He kills or badly injures one of the attackers…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Trace the Transfer
Think of a cause, a role, or a piece of unfinished work that got handed to someone after the original person could no longer carry it. This could come from the book, from history, from your workplace, or from your own family. Draw a simple line on paper: on the left, write the name of the person who started the work and what they were trying to do. On the right, write who ended up carrying it next. In the middle, write the moment or event that caused the transfer.
Consider:
- •Did the person on the right choose this role, or did circumstances choose it for them? Does that difference matter in how they carried it?
- •Did the mission stay the same when it transferred, or did the new carrier reshape it to fit their own understanding and situation?
- •What did the transfer cost the person who received it, and what, if anything, did it give them in return?
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when someone else's unfinished business landed in your lap. Maybe a parent's debt, a coworker's caseload, a sibling's responsibility, a neighbor's fight. Did you carry it willingly or reluctantly? Looking back, was it yours to carry at all?
