Holden packs in the night. He will not wait until Wednesday to face his parents. He sells his typewriter for a few dollars and wakes Ackley long enough to say he is going. Ackley is half asleep and does not care. Holden looks once more at the Ossenburger wing. He is not sad to leave Pencey. He is sad that leaving never fixes what is inside him. He leaves a note telling Stradlater to ask Jane about her kings in the back row, then walks into the cold with cheap suitcases.
At the station his nose still hurts. The late train to New York is almost empty. He smokes where he should not and watches Pennsylvania go by, counting the schools that have already shipped him on. He thinks of calling someone in the city and does not. Jane, the East Side apartment, Phoebe: every call would require an explanation he is not ready to give. He invents lives for the other passengers. The stories drift back to loss. He talks to Allie and asks not to disappear.
The escape from the school is finished. The loneliness is on the train with him. Manhattan is close, and the first night alone in it has not started yet.
A departure can feel like freedom until the same loneliness takes the next seat. Holden sells his typewriter, leaves a note about Jane's kings, and rides towards New York still talking to Allie.
