The Rest Home — The Catcher in the Rye

Holden is back at the rest home in California. He will not narrate the exact path from the apartment to the bed he is in now. He got sick. He is getting help. He might start at another school in the fall and is supposed to apply himself, which sounds weary even as he says it.

What surprises him is missing people. Stradlater, Ackley, Jane, Sally, the nuns, Carl Luce, even Maurice, even Antolini. He spent the story calling them phony or worse, and telling it has made him lonely for them. He tells you not to tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody. Phoebe visits. D.B. visits, still too Hollywood for Holden's taste. The family holds. He does not promise to stop seeing through people, or to pass his classes. He stops talking, as if the telling itself has worn him out, and the next term is still unwritten.

He half believes the next school and fully believes the missing. Confession did what he warned it would do. The voice pauses there, not because the weekend is solved. Whether he will catch children or fall himself is not a question the bed can answer yet. He has survived long enough to say so.
