Old Spencer's Lecture — The Catcher in the Rye

Holden sits in Mr. Spencer's house while the old teacher, small inside a ratty bathrobe, asks about the headmaster's news. Mrs. Spencer offers coffee. Holden takes it so he will not seem rude, then worries about the germs. The visit has barely started and he already wants the door.

Spencer reads the failed history exam aloud, including the note at the bottom telling Holden to think about his future. Life, Spencer says, is a game you play by the rules. Holden nods in the right places and disagrees in private. A game only feels like a game if you are on the side where nothing bad happens. When Spencer asks about his parents, Holden will not discuss them. The advice sounds true and still useless. He knows he should care in the way adults want. He does not.

He invents a train and bags in the dormitory, thanks Spencer, and gets back into the cold. The kindness was real. So was the feeling of being a problem to be solved. He walks towards Pencey more sure that leaving is right, and still with nowhere good to go. The cheer at the door belongs to Spencer. It does not come down the path with him.
