A Cabbie, Some Nuns, a Record — The Catcher in the Rye

In the morning Holden leaves the Edmont and eats at a sandwich bar beside two nuns who are teachers moving to a new school. They talk about Romeo and Juliet. He gives ten dollars he cannot spare and walks away surprised that nobody performed. The kindness is plain, and he is not used to it.

He is carrying Little Shirley Beans, a record for Phoebe, and he imagines her face. That picture lifts him more than the city does. In a cab he asks again where the ducks go when the lagoon freezes. The driver gets angry and tells him to drop it. Holden still needs to know whether things that vanish in winter have somewhere safe. He does not.

Loneliness wins. He calls Sally Hayes, dramatic and familiar, and arranges a theatre date he immediately doubts. He buys tickets, plans to dodge any question about Pencey, and heads towards the Biltmore with the record tucked away. The nuns and the gift have given the morning a shape. He knows the shape will not hold. For a few blocks he is moving towards a person instead of only away from a school, and he does not trust it. The record stays tucked close, safer than the plan.
