Divine Rapture and Spiritual Courage

The Interior Castle by Saint Teresa of Ávila

Listen to Next Chapter

Teresa explains rapture, ecstasy, and trance as one grace whereby God suspends the soul to fortify the butterfly for divine espousals. Courage is required because wedding the King of heaven exceeds marrying an earthly monarch; our timid nature needs grace to endure such nearness. Genuine rapture differs from weak women's fancies or stupor from quiet prayer. Sometimes a remembered word of God inflames the interior spark until the soul rises like a phoenix, purified and united in ways it cannot later explain though faculties were not stunned like a fit.

During suspension God may reveal mysteries imprinted on memory, unspeakable truths like Jacob's ladder or Moses at the burning bush, where God showed secrets amid thorns that gave courage for Israel's liberation. Teresa compares ecstasy to the Duchess of Alva's crowded museum: the soul grasps the whole collection yet cannot recount each object. False raptures lack divine mysteries and resemble natural weakness. In true rapture God ravishes the bride, closes every mansion door, may deprive speech, senses, even breath, yet the suspension is brief.

Afterward the will remains inebriated, earthly matters seem sleep, and the soul craves suffering and service, wishing for a thousand lives to praise God. Public ecstasy brings shame testing humility; our Lord says men will praise Him or condemn the soul, and either way she gains. False raptures discredit genuine favors, so Teresa urges discernment.

Why This Matters

Connect literature to life

Skill: Courage for Transformation

Profound change can feel like losing yourself before you find a larger life. Teresa says rapture suspends faculties like Moses at the burning bush, imprinting courage for labors the soul could not undertake alone. When a breakthrough disorients you, protect the integration period instead of apologizing to people invested in your old self.

Key Quotes & Analysis

"there is need of more fortitude than you suppose in order to espouse the King of heaven."

— Teresa

Context: Opening argument for courage before rapture

Spiritual espousal demands more bravery than earthly marriage.

In Today's Words:

Teresa says espousing the King of heaven requires more fortitude than you suppose, though an earthly monarch might seem easier to wed. Great love intimidates nature. Ask God for courage, not comfort alone. Carry that insight into one concrete choice before the day ends. Carry that insight into one concrete choice before the day ends.

"Neither was Moses able to relate more than God willed of what he had seen in the burning bush; [273] but unless the Almighty had clearly revealed certain mysteries to his soul, causing it to see and know its God was present, the lawgiver could never have undertaken so many and such great labours. Such sublime revelations were shown him amidst the thorns of the bush as to give him the needful courage for his great deeds on behalf of the Children of Israel"

— Teresa

Context: Moses as model of unspeakable revelation and courage

God imprinted mysteries that empowered great labor though words failed.

In Today's Words:

Teresa recalls Moses could not relate all he saw in the burning bush, yet God imprinted mysteries that gave courage for Israel's labors. Some gifts equip action, not speech. Serve what you cannot fully describe. Carry that insight into one concrete choice before the day ends.

"I stood amazed on entering it and wondered what could be the use of such a jumble of knick-knacks; then I thought that the sight of so many different things should lead one to praise God. It is fortunate I saw them, for they offer me a suitable comparison in this case"

— Teresa

Context: Duchess of Alva museum simile for ecstasy

The soul grasps a whole collection yet cannot itemize each treasure afterward.

In Today's Words:

Teresa stood amazed in the Duchess of Alva's museum, grasping the whole jumble yet unable to recall each object, finding a simile for ecstasy. You may remember the visit, not every detail. Let the whole impress you. Carry that insight into one concrete choice before the day ends.

"This supreme state of ecstasy never lasts long, but although it ceases, it leaves the will so inebriated, [282] and the mind so transported out of itself that for a day, or sometimes for several days, such a person is incapable of attending to anything but what excites the will to the love of God; although wide awake enough to this, she seems asleep as regards all earthly matters"

— Teresa

Context: Spiritual inebriation after rapture

Brief suspension leaves the will drunk on God and indifferent to earthly business for days.

In Today's Words:

Teresa says supreme ecstasy never lasts long yet leaves the will inebriated and the mind transported so the person seems asleep to all earthly matters for days. Integration takes time. Protect the aftermath for service. Carry that insight into one concrete choice before the day ends.

Discussion Questions

This is not a test. Five prompts guide you through the chapter, from how it opens to how it closes, so you notice context and rhythm rather than facts to memorize. Sit with each question in your own words. When you see "One way to read it," treat it as a starting point, not the only answer.

  1. 1

Why does Teresa say courage is required for divine espousals?

    ▶One way to read it

Wedding the King of heaven exceeds marrying an earthly monarch; nearness to such Majesty would overwhelm nature without God's fortifying grace.

    analysis • surface
  2. 2

How does Teresa use Moses and the burning bush?

    ▶One way to read it

God revealed mysteries amid thorns that Moses could not fully relate yet received courage for great labors on Israel's behalf.

    analysis • medium
  3. 3

When have you struggled to explain a breakthrough that still changed your priorities?

    ▶One way to read it

Describe what shifted inwardly, what you could not put into words, and how behavior changed afterward.

    application • medium
  4. 4

How does Teresa distinguish true raptures from false ones?

    ▶One way to read it

False raptures stem from natural weakness or strenuous imagination without divine mysteries; true raptures ravish the soul, imprint truth, and leave fervent service and love of suffering.

    analysis • deep
  5. 5

What would humility look like if others misunderstood your transformation?

    ▶One way to read it

Accept praise or condemnation without performing the experience, trusting that either outcome can glorify God if the soul belongs to Him.

    reflection • deep

Critical Thinking Exercise

10 minutes

Map Your Breakthrough Pattern

Think of a time when you experienced a major shift in how you saw yourself or your life - maybe getting sober, standing up to someone, going back to school, or leaving a bad relationship. Map out what happened before, during, and after this breakthrough. What triggered the total absorption Teresa describes? How did others react to your change?

Consider:

  • •Notice whether you apologized for your growth or tried to make others comfortable with your changes
  • •Identify the specific fears that made the transformation feel risky, even though it was positive
  • •Consider how long the 'intoxication' period lasted and what helped you integrate the change

Journaling Prompt

Write about a transformation you're avoiding right now because you're worried about how others will react. What would change if you stopped caring about their comfort with your growth?

Powell's City of Books

Portland, Oregon

If you ever find yourself in Portland, walk to the corner of Burnside and 10th. The building takes up an entire city block. Inside is over a million books, new and used on the same shelf, organized by color-coded rooms with names like the Rose Room and the Pearl Room. You can lose an afternoon. You can lose a weekend. You will find a book you have been looking for your whole life, and three you did not know existed.

It is a pilgrimage. We cannot find a bookstore like it anywhere on earth. If you read the classics, and you ever get the chance, go. It belongs on every reader's bucket list.
