The Weight of Keeping Secrets — Great Expectations

Pip is legally cleared when the convict confesses to the theft, but he cannot bring himself to tell Joe the truth. He loves Joe too much to risk the shame he imagines would follow, and he morbidly pictures every meal, beer mug, and quiet evening at the fire becoming evidence against him. He knows confession would be right; fear of losing his only friend keeps him silent.

That silence becomes the first real wedge between them. Pip has discovered how easily he chooses comfort over honesty, a pattern his ambitions will later enlarge into betrayal. Christmas morning he expects arrest at every knock, yet the household bustles with holiday preparations as if nothing happened. Mrs. Joe scours the house while Joe is banished to the doorstep to keep out of the dustpan.

After the prison-ship expedition Joe carries him home asleep on his back, while Mr. Wopsle sulks in damp clothes and Mrs. Joe's guests invent theories. Pumblechook triumphantly reconstructs a burglary through the chimney, and the company believes him because he drives his own chaise-cart. The talk fades, but Pip's secret does not. He begins the long habit of sitting beside the people who love him most while hiding what would heal the relationship if spoken.
