Epictetus closes the manual with three topics in order. First and most necessary: practical application of principles, as we ought not to lie. Second: demonstrations, why we ought not to lie. Third: logical connection, why this is a demonstration. Third supports second; second supports first; we ought to rest on the first.

We do the contrary. We spend all diligence on the third point and neglect the first. At the same time that we lie, we are very ready to show how it is demonstrated that lying is wrong. Theory without practice, proof while breaking the rule.

Upon all occasions have maxims ready at hand: follow Zeus and Destiny cheerfully; yield properly to Fate; if it pleases the gods, let it be; Anytus and Melitus may kill but cannot hurt. Application first; acceptance ready when the combat arrives.

After ranking application above demonstration, the handbook puts maxims in the hand. Conduct me, Zeus, and thou, O Destiny, wherever your decrees have fixed my lot. I follow cheerfully; and, did I not, wicked and wretched, I must follow still. Then Socrates in the cell: O Crito, if it thus pleases the gods, thus let it be. Anytus and Melitus may kill me indeed; but hurt me they cannot. The aim is not a finished sage on the last page. It is a sentence ready when the men who can end a life are already in the room.

Key Insight

The men who could kill Socrates could not complete the injury he refused to grant them. Seeking him means keeping that sentence closer than the proof that you already resemble him.

Wool and Milk, Not Grass

The first and most necessary topic in philosophy is the practical application of principles: we ought not to lie. The second is demonstrations: why we ought not to lie. The third is the logic that props the second. We do the contrary. We spend all our time on the third and neglect the first. Therefore, at the same time that we lie, we are very ready to show how it is demonstrated that lying is wrong. The inverted order is the performance in its pure form: a proof so polished it no longer needs to be lived.

Key Insight

The dinner-table logician who can unpack a demonstration while breaking the rule is not a hypocrite by accident. He has ranked the third topic as the work. The first topic is the work. The rest is furniture.
