Pain, Truth, and Wishing on Stars — The Blue Castle

Valancy races home from the silver wedding through blue twilight, and the exertion may worsen what comes next. Alone in her room she suffers the worst attack yet, pain so violent she wonders if she is dying and longs for someone who would hold her hand and mean it, not fuss like her mother or Cousin Stickles. In that loneliness Barney Snaith rises unbidden to her mind, felt as strangely sympathetic, as if defending him at dinner created a bond. She struggles to reach Dr. Trent's prescription, eventually finds relief, and lies spent while fearing a death that hurts like this.

Then laughter surprises her. The dinner was fun because she simply said what she had always thought; Uncle Benjamin's face alone was worth the price. She expects he will cut her from his will for Olive, as he once denied her the dust-pile. Standing at her window in moist wind and starlight over Lombardies and distant Mistawis woods, she makes a whimsical wish for one little dust-pile of her own before she dies.

The chapter turns from public rebellion to private aftermath: physical cost, unexpected joy, and a first desire stated plainly for something small and hers. The window scene closes the chapter on a note of gallows humor and longing rather than regret.
