To Kill a Mockingbird Ch. 27: Halloween Plans

Summary

Autumn brings Bob Ewell back into daily traffic. He gets a WPA job and loses it almost at once. He does not blame his own conduct. He blames Atticus, as if the courtroom had followed him to the worksite. He also follows Helen Robinson along the road when she walks to work, close enough to frighten, far enough to pretend he is only using the same street. Link Deas, who has given Helen a job, will not treat that pursuit as private. He puts himself between them and threatens Bob in language Bob understands. The following stops because a white employer has made it costly, not because Bob has found a conscience.

He does not stop at Helen. One Sunday night someone trespasses at Judge Taylor's house. A shadow at the rear is enough to tell the town that Bob's spite has a second address. Taylor had run the trial. Atticus had argued it. Helen is Tom's widow. The pattern is not a mystery, even when no arrest follows. Alexandra feels unease she cannot pin to one fact. Atticus still prefers to treat Bob as a man who will spend anger in small, ugly gestures. Alexandra's nerves are not so sure.

Maycomb plans a Halloween pageant so children will be under a roof after last year's prank on the Barber sisters. Mrs Merriweather writes an agricultural show. Scout is cast as a ham. The costume is cloth and wire, a walking joke she cannot put on or take off without help. Inside it her arms are useless and her sight is poor. On the night itself Atticus and Alexandra are too tired to go. Jem walks her to the school through the dark, a brother on an errand. Scout moves beside him in the ham, already dependent on someone else to steer her through doors.

A campaign can hide inside events too small to arrest. Bob loses a job and blames Atticus, follows Helen until Link Deas stops him, and leaves a shadow at Judge Taylor's house, while Alexandra feels something unfinished moving in the county.

When the official record calls each act nothing, still line them up and ask whose names keep repeating.

Coming Up in Chapter 28

Cecil Jacobs jumps from the dark on the way to the school. After the pageant Scout misses her cue and stays in the ham. On the walk home someone follows them under the oak, and the night ends with a body on the ground.

List Bob's autumn moves in order: the lost job, Helen's road, Judge Taylor's Sunday, Alexandra's unease. Beside each, write the official excuse (nothing, public street, no arrest, nerves). Then write one sentence that treats them as a single campaign.

Consider:

•Whose name repeats as the target or the blamed cause?
•What would have to happen for Atticus's 'small gestures' reading to be safe enough for a night walk?
•If you were sealed in a costume you could not manage, whom would you trust to steer you, and who is too tired to come?
