To Kill a Mockingbird Ch. 13: Aunt Alexandra

Summary

Aunt Alexandra has come to stay, not to visit. Atticus, once he is home, explains in the mild voice he uses when a decision is already made that Scout needs a feminine influence. Scout hears the verdict under the courtesy: her trousers, fists, and life as Jem's deputy are now a problem to solve. Alexandra unpacks as if the rooms have been waiting. She knows the china and which neighbours matter. Within days the ladies of Maycomb absorb her. She is firm about kin, manners, and who belongs on which side of a door.

What she loves most is the Finch name. She talks about gentle breeding the way others talk about weather, placing families by grandfather and river acre, calling some trash. Cousins, land, and old stories become a kind of law. Scout, used to taking people one at a time, finds the system boring and menacing. The lecture is never only about table manners. It is about caste. In Alexandra's mouth Maycomb is a ranked list, not a town of neighbours.

Atticus tries to deliver the lesson after she presses him. He sits the children down and talks about ancestry and expected conduct. The words do not sound like him. Scout comes close to tears: the man who taught them to judge from the other side is asking them to judge by pedigree. He sees what he is doing, stops, and tells them to forget it. He cannot make the caste talk true for him. He will not enforce her religion of blood, and he will not start an open fight in week one. Meals grow more formal. Company appears. Scout is watched for signs of improvement. Jem absorbs some of her gravity without joining her side. The children go to bed in a home that still has Atticus in it and no longer feels entirely his.

Hearing a Rented Script

A person under family pressure will sometimes read a ranking they do not believe, and the falsehood shows first in the voice. Atticus sits the children down to talk about ancestry, hears himself asking them to judge by pedigree, sees Scout near tears, and tells them to forget it because he cannot make the caste talk true.

When a speech in your mouth goes dead, stop before someone smaller has to cry you back to yourself.

The Robinson case is now street talk, and Scout will finally ask Atticus what rape is. Alexandra will try to have Calpurnia dismissed. That night Scout will feel something under her bed that is not a snake.

Write the last ranking speech you repeated to keep a forceful person calm: about family, taste, professionalism, or who counts as trash. Then write the withdrawal Atticus finally gives, in your own words: you cannot make that talk true. End with one concrete house rule you will keep anyway, so the withdrawal is not only a hallway apology.

Consider:

•Whose door were you guarding when you recited the script, and who went smaller in the room?
•What would an open disagreement in week one have cost, compared with the tilt Scout feels when a trusted voice goes dead?
•Which of Alexandra's formal changes, meals, guests, watchfulness, can continue even after the speech is taken back?
