Chapter 09
Memories of Luke and the Border
Offred sits in the waiting room, still and obedient on the outside, while her mind tears open the night everything ended. She, Luke, and their daughter had fake papers and a plan. They drove toward the border with the particular terror of people who know they have one chance. Then came the checkpoint lights, the soldiers, hands pulling her from the car, her daughter screaming in a coat she can still picture the color of. Luke's voice cut off. After that: gaps. She may have been drugged. She does not know if he was shot, captured, or made it into…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Trace the Warning Back
Think of one situation in your life that went badly, a job, a relationship, a financial decision, a living situation. Now trace it back and ask honestly: was there a warning? It does not have to have been dramatic. It might have been a friend who asked one careful question, a parent who went quiet when you told them the news, a coworker who said something you brushed off. Write down what the warning was, who gave it, and what you told yourself at the time that made it easy to set aside.
Consider:
- •Notice whether the warning came from someone you found annoying, overbearing, or too close to the situation. Ask whether that closeness was actually why they could see it clearly.
- •Ask yourself what it would have cost you to take the warning seriously at the time. Sometimes we dismiss warnings not because we disbelieve them, but because acting on them feels harder than hoping for the best.
- •Consider whether the person who warned you knew they were warning you, or whether they were just expressing care in the only way they had available.
Journaling Prompt
Write about what you would say to that person now if you could. Not to apologize necessarily, but to close the loop. What would you want them to know about what you understand today that you did not understand then?
