Chapter 07
Moira's Escape from the Red Center
Moira is already gone by the time this chapter begins, but she fills every line of it. Offred lies in the dark and replays the story of her college friend's escape from the Rachel and Leah Center, the indoctrination facility where women are broken into Handmaids. It is a story she has told herself so many times it has taken on the texture of legend, and that is exactly the point. The escape itself was audacious in its simplicity. Moira faked illness, slipped away during a fire drill, dismantled a plumbing fixture in the bathroom, and used the metal parts…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Find Your Living Example
Think of a system you currently live or work inside, a job, a family structure, a neighborhood, a institution, where an unspoken rule says that pushing back is pointless or dangerous. Now think carefully: is there already someone in that system who broke that rule and survived? Your job is to find that person, or that story, and write it down in as much detail as you can remember.
Consider:
- •What exactly did that person do differently from everyone else, and what did they risk by doing it?
- •How did the people around them react, both at the moment it happened and afterward?
- •Did their example change what you or others believed was possible, even slightly?
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when you stayed quiet or went along with something because you believed resistance was impossible. Looking back now, was it truly impossible, or had you just never seen anyone try? What would it have taken for you to be the living example for someone else?
