Summary

Aunt Lydia presides over the Salvaging with her familiar combination of warmth and threat. Her voice is honeyed but her purpose is steel. Three women are to be executed: two Handmaids and a Wife, each condemned for a different flavor of betrayal against Gilead. The crimes are named in vague, official language, which is deliberate. Offred stands in the circle beside Ofglen, and her mind is working on two tracks at once. On the surface, she watches the ritual unfold with the numb attention of someone who has learned that survival sometimes means keeping your face neutral. Underneath, she is holding a private, terrifying possibility: she may be pregnant with Nick's child. She calls it a secret bomb, and that image lands hard. A pregnancy in Gilead is never just a personal matter. It belongs to the state, to the Commander, to the system. If it is real, it changes everything about her position, her danger, and her worth.

She scans the crowd for Moira, knowing it is a foolish hope. She remembers Aunt Lydia teaching them at the Red Center that rage is a gift. At the time, Offred feared what that meant. Today she begins to understand it in a new and sickening way.

The chapter builds toward a twist that shifts the event from witnessing to participation. Aunt Lydia announces that a male prisoner, accused of raping a Handmaid and killing her unborn child, will not hang. Instead, the Handmaids themselves will administer justice. The circle tightens. Offred's hands begin to shake.

Atwood is doing something precise here. She shows how authoritarian systems survive by making victims into enforcers. If the Handmaids carry out the punishment, they become part of the machinery. Their rage, real and justified, gets aimed where the system points it. That is not justice. That is control wearing justice as a costume.
