Summary

The car ride home from Jezebel's is nearly silent. Fred hums to himself, comfortable in the way that men are comfortable when they have gotten what they wanted. Offred stares out at Gilead's empty streets, the city locked down for curfew while its most powerful citizens slip back to their respectable lives. The gap between what Gilead preaches and what it actually does has never felt wider or more nauseating.

At home, Serena Joy is waiting in the hallway. She is wrapped in her blue robe, eyes red, and she does not need anyone to tell her where Fred has been. She can smell it. The confrontation that follows is not Offred's to witness directly. Offred disappears upstairs, invisible the way handmaids are always invisible until someone needs to blame them for something.

The bath Offred takes lasts for hours. She scrubs the stage makeup off her skin, watches the colors bleed into the sink, and tries to scrub away something that has no color and no name. The red dress from Jezebel's hangs on a hook like an accusation. Before she sleeps, she tucks a matchbook into the seam of her mattress. It is a small, foolish thing to keep. It is also the only evidence that the night happened, that Moira was there and broken, that the republic's holy men paid for women in sequined costumes.

Memories surface and drift: Moira's laugh before everything changed, Luke's hand, Aunt Lydia's particular brand of cheerful cruelty. Offred holds these like stones, turning them over, trying to stay anchored to who she was.

Through the wall she hears Serena screaming. Fred, presumably, says very little. The fight is about betrayal in general terms, not about Offred specifically, not yet. The household staff pretend to be deaf. This is what survival looks like inside Gilead: everyone performing ignorance while the walls shake.

Lying in the dark, Offred thinks about the Mayday network. She imagines it like veins running under the city, carrying something necessary and hidden. She is not part of it yet. But for the first time, that feels like a condition she intends to change.
