The Handmaid's Tale Ch. 19: Birth Day Summons

Summary

Downstairs, Janine labors on the birthing stool, screaming and pushing while Handmaids circle her and chant encouragement coached by Aunt Lydia, who moves through the room with the cheerful efficiency of a party host distributing instructions. Upstairs, the Wife lies in her canopy bed performing a mock labor, pampered and fed, waiting to receive the child that Janine is bleeding to produce. The doubling is not accidental. It is doctrine made flesh. The Wife will claim the baby. Janine will be evaluated, rewarded or punished, based on whether the child survives and is healthy. Her body is the instrument; someone else holds the score.

Offred holds Janine's hand and resents the forced intimacy of it. Janine, lost in pain and confusion, calls out for a baby from her previous life, before Gilead, before all of this. The room does not acknowledge it. The chanting continues.

What saves Offred, at least partially, is memory. She drifts back to her own daughter's birth: Luke holding her ankle, hospital machines tracking heartbeats, the specific private miracle of it. That memory is contraband here. It belongs to a world where her body was her own and birth was not a national event. She holds it carefully, the way you hold something you know will be taken if anyone sees it.

She chants with the others because not chanting is noticed. That detail matters. Compliance and belief look identical from the outside, and Gilead counts on that. The regime needs the performance of faith more than faith itself, and everyone in that room understands this without saying it.

Nick waits somewhere outside. The secret of Fred's study presses quietly against the spectacle around her. Offred's life has fractured into sealed compartments, the Ceremony, the walks, the study, and now this, and none of them can touch the others. As Janine's voice breaks and labor intensifies, Offred prays alongside everyone else, her voice hollow as a drum struck in an empty room.
