Chapter 16
After the Ritual
After the Ceremony, the house feels like a stage where everyone is performing normalcy badly. Serena avoids Offred except to issue orders. Fred reads news at breakfast as if nothing happened between them. The Marthas trade gossip in the kitchen about pregnancy signs, old superstitions dressed up as official wisdom. And Offred watches her own body the way you watch a wound, with dread and a hope she refuses to name. Memory keeps pushing through. She thinks about Luke, about choosing each other in afternoon light with no one watching and no permission required. She thinks about her daughter's birth,…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Map Your Interior Room
Offred survives by finding spaces the system cannot reach: her memories, a small gesture from a friend, the private act of tracing words no one will ever read. Think about your own life right now. Draw a simple two-column list. On the left, write down two or three situations where you feel your choices are controlled or limited by something outside yourself. On the right, write down the small thing you already do, or could do, that belongs only to you inside each of those situations. It does not have to be dramatic. It just has to be real.
Consider:
- •The thing in the right column does not need to solve the problem in the left column. Its only job is to keep you present and intact while you navigate it.
- •Notice whether your right-column items are things you are already doing but not counting as meaningful. Sometimes we dismiss our own survival strategies because they look too small.
- •Ask yourself whether any of your interior rooms are slowly being given away, not taken. Compliance that starts as strategy can become habit. There is a difference worth watching.
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when you had to leave yourself behind to get through something, a hard shift, a difficult conversation, a situation you had no power to change. What did coming back to yourself afterward feel like, and what, if anything, helped you find your way back?
