The Handmaid's Tale Ch. 12: Janine's Breaking

Summary

Janine is standing on a corner talking to angels nobody else can see. Word has spread among the Handmaids: her baby did not survive, or was declared unfit by Gilead's standards. And Janine, who has already given everything the system asked of her, has nothing left to give. She smiles at empty air and praises Aunt Lydia's kindness. The other Handmaids look away, caught between pity and a terror they cannot quite name.

Offred remembers Janine from the Red Center, where she once informed on a fellow trainee seeking comfort. Gilead rewarded that betrayal with more suffering. It always does. She also remembers the group testimony sessions where Janine described being gang-raped at fourteen, and how Aunt Lydia led the room in a chant: her fault, her fault. The ideology needed Janine to own her own destruction. Now that she has broken publicly, the system calls it spiritual failure rather than evidence of what was done to her. The cruelty is precise. Break the woman, then punish her for breaking.

Ofglen and Offred walk past the Wall. The doctor's body is gone, replaced by new ones. Ofglen whispers again, that small coded negation Offred is learning to read as resistance language. The whisper is almost nothing against the size of the state. But Offred is beginning to understand that almost nothing is still something.

Back at the Commander's house, Serena Joy comments on Janine's weak spirit over a dinner of bland stew. Fred changes the subject to birth rates. Cora whispers that God will bless Offred soon. Offred nods and thinks about Janine's angel, a hallucination she finds more honest than any of Aunt Lydia's sermons.

The night memory that keeps returning is from the Center's Particicution rehearsals, when trainees were taught to channel rage at condemned men and call it healing. Offred feared the pleasure the state was trying to cultivate in her. She still does.

Before sleep, she touches the Latin scratched into her closet wall. The question she cannot shake is whether she is closer to Janine's fate or to Moira's legend. Gilead sharpens that line between survival and madness every single day, and Offred knows it.
