A tractor rolls across Oklahoma farmland, and the man driving it is someone the tenant families recognise. He grew up nearby. He might have gone to the same church. But he is sitting on a machine owned by a bank, and he has been paid to knock down the homes of people he knows. This is the quiet horror at the centre of the chapter: the driver is not a monster. He is a man with hungry children of his own, doing the only work available, and he cannot look the tenant farmers in the eye when he explains it.
The tenants push back with everything they have, which turns out to be almost nothing. They argue that the land belongs to them by sweat and by history. Grandfathers broke this soil. Fathers buried children in it. Labour, they insist, is a form of ownership. The driver does not disagree, exactly. He just explains that the bank does not see it that way, and the bank is not a person you can argue with face to face. There is no one to confront. There is no one to shame. The system works precisely because responsibility is spread so thin that no single person has to feel it.
Women gather photographs. Men grip tools they cannot use. Children watch parents argue about whether to resist or save their energy for the road west. Handbills advertising work in California have been circulating, and some families are already planning to go. Others wait until hunger or the threat of violence makes the decision for them. The tractor does not pause for any of it. It cuts a straight line through the field and keeps moving.
What Steinbeck is doing here is pulling the camera back from the Joad family to show that their crisis is not unique. Thousands of families are standing in yards just like this one, holding whatever they could grab in the last few minutes, watching a machine erase the place they called home. The driver's guilt is real and completely useless. The chapter ends with land changing hands and people being treated as obstacles in the process. It is one of the most honest pictures of economic displacement ever written, and it lands harder because nobody in it is trying to be cruel.
Machines arrive faster than mercy when profit needs the land cleared. He might have gone to the same church.
