Allie's Baseball Glove — The Catcher in the Rye

Holden stays with the mitt. Allie was gentle and brilliant, and the green-ink poems are one of the few solid things left. Writing them down was the honest answer to a lazy request. Stradlater could not see that, and the resentment hardens.

He remembers a snowball fight at Pencey, cold air and mischief, a rare hour when the school was almost bearable, until a teacher stopped them. The memory makes the present worse. Rather than keep arguing, he goes into Agerstown with Robert Brossard and Ackley. They eat hamburgers. The talk is small. At the movie everything looks fake. Holden cannot watch. He is still on Jane's date, still on Allie, still on the expulsion. He annoys the others with his disgust.

During the film he rehearses a confrontation and gets angrier. Allie's red hair, the poems, the outfield: the essay was meant to honour that, not to cover Stradlater's homework. When the movie ends he walks back knowing the fight in the dormitory is no longer optional. The pointless evening in town has only sharpened the isolation he walked out to escape. He walks back with the knot still in his stomach and no softer sentence left to try.
