Catherine leaves Bath with the Tilneys, overwhelmed at breakfast by General Tilney's excessive attention and his sharp rebuke of Captain Tilney for lateness on her account. Captain Tilney whispers he will be glad when they are all gone from Milsom Street; the long wait at Petty France shows the General's impatience with inn and servants. He then sends Catherine into Henry's curricle for the second stage while he follows in his own carriage.
Henry spins a mock-Gothic arrival tale: Dorothy, locked doors, a storm, sliding panels, a secret manuscript, an extinguished lamp. Catherine insists it cannot happen to her yet listens eagerly until he laughs and tells her to finish Matilda's woes herself with her own fancy. Northanger disappoints: a modern lodge, gravel drive, rain on her bonnet, a bright drawing-room with a Rumford fireplace and large clear windows rather than ruin.
The General boasts of gilding then checks his watch; strict household hours begin at once and Eleanor shows her a comfortable chamber upstairs along a long oak gallery. The abbey is pleasant and ordinary, not Udolpho at all; Henry's fiction and her own expectations both overshoot the modernized, well-lit, comfortable house where she will actually sleep that first night.
Dramatic expectations can blind you to ordinary good fortune. Catherine arrives at Northanger expecting a Gothic ruin and struggles to see a comfortable, modernized home because Henry's tale and her novels got there first.

On the road the General's attention is excessive: a rebuke of Captain Tilney for lateness on Catherine's account, impatience with inns, a seat that looks like favour. She reads courtesy. He is showing a property to a valuation.

Lavish care is not the same as liking you. Watch whether the host is offering rooms or using you to display them.
A Drawer Full of Bills
Northanger is modern, well furnished, and disappointing. Catherine has already spent the journey stocking it with vaults. When the house refuses to match, she does not revise the order. She looks harder for the missing wing.
Key Insight
A story that has already been paid for will treat comfort as a cover. If the rooms are ordinary, the mystery must be elsewhere. That is how a plot survives contact with a building.
