The new owner of Charlie's old Massachusetts homestead is dragging a basket of potatoes through a tight stone gateway when he notices a block of native silver, eight inches square, wedged in the wall. Charlie, the mining professor too proud to work for $45 a week, had rubbed that exact stone with his sleeve for years without recognizing it. Conwell refuses to mock him alone, admitting he and his audience have made the identical mistake, just with different objects.
Conwell pivots from parable to Philadelphia directly. A real diamond found in North Carolina, traced by a mineralogist along a geological formation running up through Virginia and the Atlantic coast, becomes his evidence that Philadelphia itself could sit over an actual diamond-bearing strata. But the literal minerals are only his opening wedge.
