Conwell closes with his own homecoming as a young captain returning to his Massachusetts hometown, greeted by a full parade, flags, and a seat of honor beside the town's selectmen. The town's chairman, a man who has never given a speech before and has clearly memorized it walking the pasture, delivers a halting, repetitive tribute crediting young Conwell with charging ahead of his troops, sword flashing in the sunlight, shouting his men forward.

Conwell states plainly that he never did any such thing, and that doing so would have been against basic military procedure, since officers stay behind the line in actual combat rather than exposing themselves in front of their own men. The real soldiers who suffered, foraged, and died under his command go essentially unmentioned in the speech, reduced to background details in a story built around invented heroics attributed to their young captain.

Conwell draws the lecture's final lesson directly from this embarrassing tribute: greatness is not about holding some future office or performing a dramatic myth about yourself, but about doing real, useful work with whatever means are already available, right where you actually live. The lecture's closing line delivers Conwell's central thesis outright: whoever can genuinely benefit their own city, whatever their occupation or station, must first be great in their own Philadelphia before they can be great anywhere else.
