BACK MATTER
ON THE MAKING
Behind the Door
Every book in the Amplified Living series has a section called Behind the Door, placed here at the back for the reader who wants to know something about the making.
Here is what is behind this door.
I am an IT consultant of twenty-seven years who went bankrupt and rebuilt my life in part through literature and in part through an unlikely partnership with artificial intelligence. The bankruptcy was real. The rebuilding was real. The partnership is the part that requires explaining.
The Amplified Living series, of which this is the second book, is produced through what I have come to think of as the alchemy of truths: a sustained dialogue between my judgment and editorial instinct and the drafting speed and pattern recognition of an AI collaborator. I am the alchemist. The AI is the instrument. The judgment is mine. The drafting is ours. Neither alone could produce the work. Together it works, and the working is real.
I say this directly and without apology because the alternative, which is silence on the subject, treats the collaboration as something to be hidden, and the hiding would be a kind of dishonesty that runs against everything this book is trying to do. The book asks you to bring your wound honestly. The least I can offer is the same honesty about how the book was made.
The WideReads project, which underlies the series, began as my attempt to make the classics accessible to people who had been told, implicitly or explicitly, that the great books were not for them. The site now carries more than a hundred classic works, each with chapter summaries, thematic analyses organized around essential life skills, and audio narration produced through ElevenLabs. It is free. It has always been free. The premise is that the wisdom in the classics belongs to whoever needs it, and the barrier to entry should be nothing more than the willingness to read.
The IT consultant who found Dante in the wreckage of a failed career did not expect to spend his later years building a literary website and writing books about what the classics taught him. The detour was not in the plan. It turned out to be the road. The ninth paradox in this book covers that discovery in full.
The books in this series are what the discovery produced. The alchemy is ongoing. The work is real.
The library is at WideReads.com. The next book is waiting when you are.
